The Rainer Valley Historical Society grew out of the Pioneers of Columbia City, who had their first meeting in April of 1891. Almost a century after the society's commencement, the group almost disbanded due to outdated membership requirements. Thanks to Buzz Anderson, a revival meeting in May 1993 jump-started interest and welcomed anyone that had a desire to preserve the area's history as members. Today, the Rainier Valley Historical Society's mission is to collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret the history and heritage of Rainier Valley and vicinity and its people, and to promote public involvement in and appreciation of its history and culture.

The Historical Society maintains an extensive archival collection of over 1500 photographs of historic Rainier Valley, as well as newspaper clippings, maps, letters, artifacts, and documents depicting the Valley's development since 1853. The Historical Society is a wonderful resource for educators, historians, students, and anyone interested in the heritage of the Rainier Valley.

Since 1993 the Society has more than tripled its archives, moved into a fully equipped office with secure storage and public exhibit space, and expanded to 350 members. Their endowment fund is growing with donations, and volunteers are helping to keep us moving forward. The Historical Society publishes a quarterly newsletter for our members and friends all over the country and regularly presents slide shows at local schools and other organizations, passing on the history and enthusiasm to the children of the Rainier Valley. The Historical Society continues to collect Rainier Valley historical material at the rate of over one hundred donations per year.

The Historical Society is open to anyone, resident or not, that has an interest in Rainier Valley's history. Dues range from an individual or family membership of $15 to a lifetime membership of $150.
