Rainier Valley Food Stories

Multi-cultural oral history project resulting in community history cookbook.

This project began with a two-year multicultural oral history project based on food, using Rainier Beach High School students and adult volunteers as interviewers. We wanted to use the universal topic of food to reach out to the many different ethnic and cultural groups in the Rainier Valley. We also worked with teen photographers from Youth in Focus to document some of the stories we uncovered.

The material was published in a community history cookbook in the fall of 2002, with a reprint issued in the fall of 2005. The cookbook is available for sale from the Rainier Valley Historical Society or at Bookworm Exchange in Columbia City.

Thanks to 4Culture and the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods for supporting this project.
